The Training Programme

Austin Vocal Psychotherapy is the use of the breath, natural sounds, vocal improvisation, songs and dialogue within a client and therapist relationship to facilitate intra-psychic and interpersonal change and growth. It combines teachings from depth psychology, trauma theory and psychodrama with the practice of vocal music therapy. This model includes Vocal Holding Techniques©, Free Associative Singing© and other techniques for accessing conscious and unconscious feelings, memories and associations.

Feedback From Trainees

A level of vocal power I had never accessed before

I appreciated the way the trainer balances insightful feedback with thought-provoking questions, and how she paces these to allow space for reflection and integration. In my first experience of vocal holding with her, I felt truly supported to explore. My body felt safe enough to release some heavy emotions, and I encountered a level of vocal power I had never accessed before. That could have felt overwhelming, but the trainer grounded the experience with such care and attunement. It was exactly what I needed at that time in my life, and I genuinely credit that session with sparking meaningful change that has continued to unfold ever since.’

Touched and assured of the transformation that has begun

‘I left the first experiential week feeling incredibly touched and assured of the transformation that has begun in me as a result of the teaching and attention, as well as the group’s engagement in our shared experience of the course. I went in knowing the content and teaching would be impactful, but was amazed by the deep impact that our cohort of learners also had on one another’s process.’

Cathleen Flynn, USA

Vocal psychotherapy in UK was a great experience for me.

‘Vocal psychotherapy in UK was a great experience for me. Our group consisted of music therapists from all over the world, which is amazing! I feel much more confident using my voice as a music therapist and I have plenty of new tools which will help me work more deeply with my clients. This course is not just helping me as a therapist but on a more personal level as well; using my voice at this level is enabling me to understand more about myself, my past, my fears and where I am right now. I highly recommend this course to any music therapist who wants to use the voice to work at a deeper psychoanalytical level with their clients.’
